Jo and I deemed this Saturday a good day for breakfast. So we took a walk a few blocks away to the Clinton Street District. There’s a small Swedish style place there called Broder. The environment inside is neighborhood up scale, clean, well kept, and stylish with a counter top and 2 seat tables lined against a back bench along the wall opposite the kitchen. Kind of like a Diner, except Swedish style.
The menu has a good selection for moderate prices. Not the $20 dollar range, but definitely in the $15 “ish” dollar range. The food is quality stuff, with consistency. Two traits standard of inner and downtown Portland establishments, except Broder ups it a notch.
Jo got the Meatball Sandwich, which included sherry cream sauce and lingonberry jam. I'm a sucker for lingonberry jam so I stole some of hers straight from the dish. In addition she also had a bowl of Shrimp Bisque, which I also snagged a few spoonfuls of. Everything was consistent, proper temperatures, and served with simple plate presentation. I personally loved the Shrimp Bisque, but did think it needed a slight bit more thickness. All in all, 4 out of 5 by me, and 4 out of 5 by Jo for this dish.
I ordered the Waffle and Ham. This was an extremely simple dish, which when a dish is this simple absolutely has to have consistency and quality ingredients. Fortunately for me that is exactly what it was. The maple syrup wasn’t the globulized mess I've seen many times, but instead the more natural and smooth flavored syrup one likes.
The ham was thin sliced and cooked perfectly. The waffle was simple with a dash of powdered sugar for that slight kick of sweetness. The egg was baked, which I'd never had an egg baked, so I had a bit of extra interest in this method. The egg, by far, was one of the best eggs I've ever had. It was lightly salted and peppered, with a small dab of butter. The egg melted in my mouth, absolutely a heavenly treat. I’d have thought it wasn’t an egg if I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I'd never thought one could get much out of an egg in the way of taste. Broder however, proved me wrong on that count.
