How Do We Get Smarter?

Monday, 13 October 2008 06:25 by Adron

I'm sitting here after the beerandblog event at The Green Dragon.  It was fun, and always, I enjoy being around such a group of smart individuals.  These people, as one would expect, are a few grades higher than the average American.  There are, needless to add but I will anyway, a few extra IQ points to go around at such events.  Of course, speaking to each other, there is far more modesty and lack of this reality than one might think.  The people there aren't full of themselves, there is a certain clique type of environment, but for the most part everyone is friendly, courteous, and genuinely interested in ideas, thoughts, and each other.

As I sit here now, after all of this though I ponder something.  We're creating new technology all the time to make various parts of our lives easier, to make information arrive faster, to get more accurate information for decisions, and then act faster on those decisions.  We're building more tools to provide and act upon this information, but what sticks?  Is it making us smarter?  Does it help real logical and reason based cognitive thought or are we just continuing to assume the same old human behaviors?

In other words, are we stepping up to our technology or are we letting it surpass us?

I honestly, am not truly sure at this time.  For some, the technology enables, for billions it serves barely any purpose whatsoever.  So how do we resolve this issue?

Questions that leave me pondering.  How do we get smarter?
